Tommaso Cappellato - Butterflying(Mother Tongue Records) - Release Date: May 21 2019

Butterflying — the latest offering from Italian multi-instrumentalist, producer and selector, Tommaso Cappellato — is an honest celebration of musical evolution.

Inspired by a recent trip to NYC (where he spent most of his formative years) and a beat tape by definition, these eight tracks saunter between lo-fi hip hop and free jazz, from downtempo electronica to ambient bliss; the result of an open-hearted approach to discovery and time spent meticulously unearthing, rearranging and merging old and new material.

It’s this ‘built with care’ attitude that makes Butterflying the perfect first release on dj/producer Patrick Gibin’s groundbreaking new venture, Mother Tongue. Started in 2019, it houses an independent record label, vinyl pressing plant, distribution and shop under one roof, prioritising growing quality relationships with quality artists.

Newcomers will find out that over the years, Tommaso has nurtured an extensive catalog of material that spans from free‐form hip-hop, techno and ambient music to pretty much any subgenre of jazz one can conceive.

Highlights include Aforemention, his visionary album exposing his own concept of jazz-informed experimental electronic soundscapes and Astral Travel, his spiritual jazz ensemble. Mentored by jazz visionaries Harry Whitaker (Black Renaissance) and drummer Michael Carvin (Pharoah Sanders), Cappellato’s latest collaborations have seen him work alongside Afrikan Sciences, Rabih Beaini, Michael Blake, Nicola Conte, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Monday Michiru, Donato Dozzy, Khalab and Maurice Louca.

Vinyl pre-orders for Butterflying will be available exclusively from from May 6, with the release date set for May 21 2019.
